so...as artists (and more importantly, as all human beings), do we create our work with an audience in mind? do we search for a specific reaction, thought, emotion, instinct from our audience? and how do you decide what is important enough to want to share with other people? what is important to YOU?

and i suppose this is my conflict. i feel a certain duty--as a creator of something to share with other people--to make it matter, to make it important. and then i wonder, should the 'importance' be positive? or just portraying a certain picture of reality (something which garners a strong emotion, and hence connection to life)? or a picture of what is only "possible" (but not yet real)? or (can you imagine it!) what is only IMpossible!?

recently i have been more moved by specific abstract pieces of art, then by any type of figurative work. but is that just me having a strong emotional gut reaction? and how does that affect me, other than just making me "feel"... (and why do i feel that is wrong, or not a worthy enough cause?) ...sorry...i tend to get lost in my own questions as well...bear with me.

no. i believe being moved by something, just because of the sheer beauty of it--if it creates a sense of true "awe" by just one viewer (or even just the creator!)--that is worth it.

...then we come back to the question of not only style, but substance.

what do you guys think? how do you choose the subject matter of your art? why do you create? how is that affected by what you believe the world will see in your art

Hello,

I have just recently started my custom airbrushing business. So far, I have had two bad clients in a row. The first guy wanted me to airbrush T-shirts for a High School basketball team, the Waterloo Wildhawks. He sent me the initial $200 to start the project, then when I had completed the project and delivered the T-shirts to him, he handed me a check. Later, the check bounced. I have called his phone numbers numerous times. I have sent him e-mails as well. I have contacted his head coach at the University, who told me since it has 'nothing to do with the University' it has nothing to do with him. I have contacted the head of the Waterloo Wildhawks, who told me that both himself and the guy who bounced the check are 'very busy'. I suppose I could take the check to the bank where it was drawn to resubmit it, but that's in another city from me (I am in Hamilton, Ontario....he is in Waterloo, Ontario. This is an hour drive.)

This guy is obviously dodging me. It looks as though I will have to take him to court.

Then, I had someone who wanted me to do his motorcycle for him. He was rude and obnoxious from the start, demanding that I drop my price. When he asked me how long it took to do a motorcycle helmet, I told him it took two weeks. He told me 'You've got a week!' I spent all week on that project, spraying a coat of paint, drying with the heat gun, sanding it. After a week was over, he said if the helmet wasn't ready then he would take it to someone else to do it. I had the design he asked for done, but I couldn't get it clear-coated. I have to send the clear-coating out to someone else, and he just had a truck come in. The client told me that since I didn't have it clear-coated for him, that I wasn't a 'professional'. Therefore, he would not be paying me for the job I did....only $60 to cover the cost of paint. I was so upset, I took the money and just let him go...even though it cost me $150 in materials and 30 hours in labor to do that helmet....which was fine. I could show you photographs of it if you wanted to see them.

In any case, I have learned to NEVER accept checks from people. Also, I have learned to prepare an invoice for the materials that I use on a project, including the materials as well as (my) labor costs. I still have a problem being assertive with people.

Has anyone else had a problem with clients?

I just completed and shipped off this grouping of 5 paintings (you can view them in my profile pics) for a group showing at Bella Perla gallery in Portland, OR. The show, called "Florals and Figures" will be up for the month of Nov. so be sure to check it out if you happen to be in the area.

I used photographs that I took on a caribbean cruise and botanical gardens for reference material. I'm wondering how well the paintings mesh as a grouping. Does the one sky/seascape fit in with the others...or is it doing it's own thing? Can anyone tell which painting was taken at the botanical gardens in CA rather than the caribbean...does one of them seem out of place?

The 5 I'm referring to in my profile are:
Caribbean December
In Belize
Caribbean Sky
Midnight Tropic
Lilly and Leaves

Any feedback on these individually or as a grouping is much appreciated.

Well...I have been working on a new painting, a totally different style for me. For a while I was really enjoying it, but now I am pretty sure that I hate it. It is still a work in progress and it's in my profile if you care to look and leave feedback, but really my question here is how many of you are your own worst critics?

I find that as soon as I finish a piece, or even towards completion of it, I start to become very critical of it. If I put it away and don't even glance at it for a few weeks then my opinion generally improves quite a bit. It's as if I have to remove myself from the immediacy of being the creator of it to really just appreciate it for what it is.

Hi Charlotte: Wondering if you considered having the word "art" in the tribe name, e.g.: Art Feedback Central. I realize you wish to keep the feedback open to all kinds of artistic expressions; and I think "art" (or some such word) can get across that idea, but, as well narrow down the search parameters for those looking for this type of tribe. Otherwise, it might be misidentified to mean a very wide range of types of feedbacks.

Just a thought.

All feedback is welcome, what you like, don't like, room for improvement, inquiries on purchasing the prints ;-) (kidding). The pics can be found in my profile, starting with "Light Striped Tunnel" and ending with "Bike in the Tunnel".

I would like to know which style people are most drawn to, what you see in them, what emotion they elicit and any critical feedback as to what you think may serve to improve the pieces. I have three predominate styles: The Swirlys are the smooth flowing forms. The Earthies are the tree root looking forms. And of course, the nudes are the Nudes. If you are a person with an issue with the spelling, let me attempt to address this on behalf of my friend. Below are a couple of possible responses to the anticipated comments pick one that will satisfy you, oh ye type "A"'s
1. Its an artist thang. She is an artist and she has signed it. She WILL NOT fix anything "post-signature" her next one will be spell checked prior to completion. But please enjoy this creative and wonderful space created by a tremendous artist and person.
2. I am not an artist, but I do enjoy art and the company of artists and from them I know that there are no mistakes. Only happy accidents. There is a deep and profound lesson to be had in tolerance and acceptance of "imperfections" here. Please take some time to reflect on it, and then enjoy this creative and wonderful space created by a tremendous artist and person.
3. This is a pyramid system. Send us all your money and you will get your "feeback" by the thirteenth person on the list. Please also enjoy this creative and wonderful space created by a tremendous artist and person while you are here.
3. ANARCHY! Damn the man! Damn the man! When you're through, please enjoy this creative and wonderful space created by a tremendous artist and person.
